In the following sections, you will find some examples of my work.
Starbucks Strategic Plan
Problem/Opportunity:
There was a need for Starbucks to develop an internal and external strategic plan.
Special Circumstances:
In order to create this plan, I split the work up with a group of classmates from my COM 378 class.
Target Publics:
The entire Starbucks corporation was the targeted audience.
Objectives:
1. Creating a strategic plan and executing it.
Evaluation:
-
Plan submission and creation were completed on time.
Press Release March Madness
Problem/Opportunity:
In this press release, Chi Omega, a campus organization, is hosting a philanthropy event called March Madness. This event benefits Make-A-Wish by raising proceeds for the foundation through the March Madness dance competition. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with critical illnesses. The purpose of this is to create awareness about the upcoming event coming up in Bloomington, Normal.
Special Circumstances:
As part of my internship with Make-A-Wish, I wrote this press release to inform the Bloomington, Normal community about the event.
Target Publics:
I targeted the Bloomington Normal community, Illinois State University students, and Make-A-Wish members.
Objectives:
1. A goal of 3,000 attendees was set for March Madness on April 1. (Benchmark: 2,600 in 2021.)
2. Achieve a fundraising goal of 60,000 dollars in 2022. (Benchmark 51,000 in 2021)
Evaluation:
1. March Madness 2022 had 2,792 attendees.
2.In 2022, Chi Omega raised 87,000 dollars, exceeding its fundraising goal of 60,000.
Television News Story: Spring Break Illinois State University
Problem/Opportunity:
In place of giving students a spring break, Illinois State University decided to give them two mental health days instead. The students saw this as a problem because the mental health days weren't going to be used correctly since students were using them for homework assignments, whereas a spring break would enable students to relax more. To express public concern about this issue, a television news story was produced.
Special Circumstances:
As part of my COM 161 Convergent Media Writing assignment, I wrote this television news story. As part of my individual assignment, I asked students about this instance and read what Illinois State had to say about it.
Target Publics:
This television news story was to inform Illinois State parents and alumni about the decision to change their Spring Break into Mental Health days that had not been properly utilized.
Objectives:
1. Have Illinois state switch back to giving students a full week of spring break rather than 2 mental health days. (Benchmark: Students in previous years benefited more from spring break than from the two mental health days.)
Evaluation:
1. It has been decided that Illinois State will have a spring break from March 5th to March 23rd this year.
Radio Story
Problem/Opportunity:
A Chi Omega on the Illinois State University campus was interviewed and I asked what she does to participate in earth day in this radio story. She said she cleaned up trash around Bloomington, Normal during an event called "Cleaning Up with the Chi O's.". I listed ways people can participate and listed ways to take part.
Special Circumstances:
This news story was written as part of an individual assignment in COM 161. Researching Earth Day and interviewing a participant were two of the tasks I had to complete.
Target Publics:
Anyone interested in earth day or who lives in the Bloomington Normal area was my target audience.
Objectives:
1. The purpose of this article is to inform people about how they can participate in earth day and what earth day entails.
2. Get more people to participate in Earth Day.
Evaluation:
1. Shelby, the interviewee, told me that more of her friends in Chi Omega decided to participate in Earth Day as a result of this radio story.
Feature Story
Problem/Opportunity:
A girl with a big career ahead of her ended up damaging her vocal folds, hindering her career in this feature story. After struggling through this, Adele was asked to perform at Illinois State.
Special Circumstances:
In COM 161, we had to create a made-up situation at Illinois State as part of an individual project.
Target Publics:
It was my goal to reach Illinois State students, anyone going through a hardship, and Adele fans.
Objectives:
1. Increase awareness of Adele's story and provide more information regarding the event.
Evaluation:
1.As this story was created by me, there was no way to evaluate it; however, it could be evaluated by asking Illinois state students if they would attend another Adele event and how they felt about it.
Public Service Announcment
Problem/Opportunity:
The purpose of this article is to raise awareness about Chi Omega's March Madness event, which benefits Make-A-Wish Illinois.
Special Circumstances:

The Bloomington, Normal and Make-A-Wish communities were targeted for this Public Service Announcement.
Objectives:
1. Publicize the event to the public.
2. Raising awareness about Make-A-Wish.
Evaluation:
1. This was sent out at an effective time.
2. 2,700 people attended March Madness.
